If you don't see what you're looking for, just shoot him an e-mail.
He can build what you need.

Here's something quite different, all still completely passive: http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkw...romZR40QQ_mdoZ

I think the dealbreaker for me was that as best I can tell, the circuit is constantly doing something when not bypassed. Position 1 is a mild treble cut, but how mild - 'ya know? I didn't want to drop that kind of money when all I was really after was a passive Vol/Blend/Tone harness with quality parts. I also didn't want to keep toggling the circuit bypass on/off if I couldn't find a set-it-and forget-it position I liked with the varitone.
I know a couple other TB'ers have tried them - maybe they will chime in with their experiences. From what I recall, it was all very positive experiences.

I am basically looking at VVT passive, looks like wymore has the best deal, CTS pots, with the knobs, 39 bucks, sounds like a good deal Quote:

As far as the question about it "doing something when not bypassed", that's not quite right. He makes a few different versions; the ones I got have a volume knob and a pickup selector switch, which are the only things affecting the signal when the Varitone is bypassed. |

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I just don't know if it will appeal to me & translate well on my personal gear. I guess most of my apprehension stems from not knowing enough specifics regarding the Q width & notch depth at each varitone position & at what frequencies those cuts occur. The demo video sure sounded pretty darn good to me though, and I almost ordered one based on that alone. I may very well re-approach it in the future when I have some gig/fun money to toss around. It does indeed look very interesting.

There are a couple of sneaky ways to create a "boost" passively, but generally speaking a passive tone setup is by definition cut-only. You want boost? You want an active preamp.
FWIW the "sneaky ways" to create boost passively are:
1) Rob energy from one frequency range in order to shunt that energy into another frequency range. I'm pretty sure that's how the Villex system works.
2) Create a tuned/tunable resonant peak in the filter. I think this also robs energy from other frequencies, but I'm not 100% sure.
Most passive setups do not take much advantage of those tricks, and are cut-only. |
