From what I hear the closest thing you'll hear to the Sadowsky preamp with a mid control is the Aguilar OBP-3. That's not to say that they sound exactly the same but the Sadowsky preamp is based on the Aguilar OBP-2 so I would assume that's your best bet. Hope that helps!

What makes you say the Sadowsky is based on the OBP-2? The Sadowsky is boost-only, and the Ag OBP-2 is boost/cut, and came out many years after the Sadowsky (as did the OBP-3).

I dont think you'll find a 3 band preamp that sounds exactly like a Sadowsky. The preamp that creates the "Sadowsky Sound" is very unique in how it functions. A Bartolini NTMB will get you close. Mike Lull uses them in his Jazz basses to great effect and Marcus Miller originally had a Bart TCT preamp in his bass.
Actually, why not just buy a Sadowsky Will Lee bass and call it a day?

this is what you are looking for

but to get that sound you are after, sadowsky or aguilar obp-1 would suit you better. just sayin'.

You could get a 3-band Sadowsky preamp, if Sadowsky would sell their preamp from their Will Lee basses.

And I'd definitely have them in my basses.

are you wanting to boost and cut the mids?
the sadowsky is scooped eq and there is a way to scoop it more but not boost the mids.
if you turn the bass and treble all the way down it is pretty flat but overall gain drops.

I think I meant the OBP-1 and I didn't mean to state it as if it were a fact, my bad on that. But, I've heard numerous times around TB that the Sadowsky was based on the OBP-1 so I'd think that the OBP-3 would be the closest he could get to that sound. I'm not sure what modifications were made to the OBP-1 or even it the claim is true but even if it isn't I've personally played on the Sadowsky pre and the only thing that comes close to it's combination of power and clarity is the OBP-3

I asked Roger about this once and he said they aren't. The external preamps certainly looked the same at the time.

Hello everybody !
Thank you for your opinion! I will open a new question on the forum: May be East J-Retro preamp is the closer to Sadowsky preamp ?
I don't know but i think with the parameric frequency + gain for the middle, we can hope closer to the Sadowsky; but the East begin at 50 Hz !

Thanks for all of You! the Sadowsky start at 40 Hz; The TCT start at 30 Hz, i bought one but the gain is very small;

i have an OBP1 start at 40 Hz too but ... i need the middle function; I tried an OBP3, 4 or 5 years ago i found the sound "nose sound".... may be today my opinion will change if i try it again

I have an Aguilar OBP-3 in my Yamaha bass with Bartolini jazz pups. I also have a Sadowsky M5-24 and they do not sound even close to me. I don't really care for the Aguilar. My Yamaha sounded better with a Bartolini 3 band preamp. If I don't sell that bass, I'll probably put a Bartolini back in - or maybe a Sadowsky...

Get a Sadowsy pre, and add an EMG Variable Mid Control, or a John East Mid Sweep 01.

I haven't treid them, but it is essentially what you want, Sadowsky pre, controllable mids.

Both of these, are designed for a flat response when in the center detent(iirc), so they shouldn't affect the Sadowsky tone, at least when set flat.

It's the Bartolini NTMB 5.4 A/P with the 3 position mini toggle for mid frequency selection. Great preamp.
