Really newbish clarification question

Ok, well I went to a music store a month ago with a friend who was getting a bass lesson, so I thought I might as well tag along with my bass and chat with the store owner.

In the conversation that ensued, he promptly started arguing that the Audere module I bought and installed in the electronics bay of my bass was not a preamp, but a pickup .

I was asking what might be the cause of low output even for a 9V system (which was answered very quickly with an email to Audere) and he insisted over and over in a very exasperated manner that a preamp was an external thing, and the basses found with batteries have active pickups (that extend into the electronics bay apparently) and there are no such things as preamps inside a bass... He also stated that anyone who tells you otherwise is "an -*pause after starting to say i-* - a really mixed up person"

so who is right? sorry for a really pointless post but I wanted a clarification other than the researching, because researching got me categorized as a really mixed up person.

Preamps exist in rackmount units, floor style stomp boxes and onboard unit for installation inside your bass guitar.

I have a Bartolini preamp in my bass. Audere makes great preamps that go inside basses.

Yes, there is such a thing as an active pickup but that is different from a preamp.

This guy may be very intelligent but he is obviously ignorant of these things. Don't take my word for it. Remember, Google is your friend.

By the way, preamps in bass guitars have been around for many, many years. Unless this guy is a phenomenal teacher, tell your friend to go to someone else.
