I hope that you find a bass that's right for you. Sometimes amp/bass combinations don't spark the right magic. Sometimes we're too close to the rig to know if it works in the song. Good luck with whatever you do.
All the best,

I've owned one for a while and I don't understand the OP's issue with the tone but then tone is in the ear of the beholder and in the end there may be nothing he can do but buy the bass that gives him whatever tone he likes. Reggie did an excellent job of configuring the bass to give you a wide range of tonal and operating options. The well made and affordable MIM version does lack a passive mode tone control (could that be the OP's beef?) but with some work you can add one in. The only other thing it lacks is an affordable five string cousin which many, Reggie included, are pushing Fender for.

| | | | how about pputting in a fender vintage pbass pu? Interesting to see that mr Hamilton uses a Roadworn. great that famous players take their time to help on a forum.
I guess this Pbass stuff is pretty subtle stuff. Ive been through a few until i got my red roadworn that sounds just right for me. |

As for the four bangers, it'll either be stainless, flats or tape wound. I've never liked nickel for myself. I don't like the character of nickel after string ages, gets dirty, etc. I use LaBella on my upright basses and my two ABGs.
I don't really have a preference but my first Fender was a '69 P Bass fretless followed closely by an L series '64 Jazz. I've always been a fan of both the P Bass and the J Bass, while liking the body shape of the J more. Currently, most of my basses are active/passive instruments for the obvious tonal reasons.
As for my JJ Basses, I have my trusty '67, Road Worn and a CS IV Mark Kendrick. | Awesome response, Reggie. Thank you.
A lot of us here on TB seem to own far more basses than they need. And Guy Pratt was here few weeks ago. He said he owned 5 basses when his career first took off with Pink Floyd.
And how many basses do you own? |

I tend to keep that info kinda private but due to the varying styles that I deal with I keep some different sounds in my bag for the assorted songwriters, composers, producers and the like.
It's not for me to say how many is too many for the TB brethren. I'm sure that my RH CS V could cover most gigs but what if I have to play upright or fretless on a session or do a McCartney thing or a Graham thing or be Babbitt or Jorge Calderon or Mark Sandman or... You get my point. |

But it's fun and does give you some cool and different sounds to mess with. And some folks actually do have use for a handful of basses. I get electric and upright calls, plus once every 5 or 6 years, someone requests a 5-string so I keep it around though I don't enjoy 5-string. Really, though, the rest are to entertain myself. Nobody's calling me for sessions, and I hate changing basses on gigs, nor does anyone want to watch me do it. But that's OK that I have too many basses as long as the kids get fed.
