He installed the SGD ND3 P2 styles in it and Larry was impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of Davids pickups (SO was I)!! Cannot wait to hear how the bass sounds when I get it home. On top of that, I bought a Squier VM V deluxe jazz bass and this go around spending mega bucks on theneck, but I WILL put the SGD ND3 Jbass pups in it with 500K Bournes Pots! |

Good job!

Coming soon maybe? heh | I already make MM pickups with neo magnets. http://www.sgd-lutherie.com/pages/ND3-M4.html
If you want big exposed neo rod magnets, then be prepared to have your strings stick to the pickup! You won't catch me making those.
These are all alnico magnet pickups.

I'm wondering right now what the main differences between series and parallel wiring would give me on a set of ND3's. The tone I'm chasing after would definitely be more of a Music Man vibe in terms of huge bottom end, however without the natural mid scoop and less of a harsh top end -- why I love Bongo's pickups which are in parallel and its electronics but the 6 string model's neck is too wide for me, they're a bit too heavy and I prefer tighter spacing. I had a Sterling Ray35 that sounded great in parallel and series w/ a filter however the just plain old "series" option was not really my taste. I'd think this is because a pickup meant to run in parallel will be hotter and darker when wired in series right? Default wiring for the ND3's is series, right? What would that mean for the tone when in parallel.

Highs are sweet, lows are throaty. In series volume increases and the tone is more aggressive, very focused and tight, and darkens up just a little bit. Either mode is warmer than my ceramic magnet pickups. Playing fingerstyle I liked parallel the best. With a pick, series is my mode of choice.

What would that mean for the tone when in parallel. | Here's an audio example of an ND3 Neo Jazzbucker bridge pickup being switched from series to parallel to single coil: Series/Parallel/Single
It might be more noticeable on a wide aperture pickup, since the narrow has that focused burpy tone.
So in general, parallel gives you a brighter tone with less mids. This is indeed how a Musicman Stringray pickup is wired, and you would get a similar tone from the ND3. But try it both ways. I think it has a good blend of frequency when wired in series.

Some soundclips of tones I'd love to get close to. I know it'll be hard to replicate exactly but the vibe is there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEuBxxpDeLw&t=2m13s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rO2K8F5-Xs&t=2m06s

In the second clip you are hearing a lot of the amp. But also sounds like the bridge pickup with a lot of the upper mids rolled off and a lot of low mids/upper bass. You can hear how the volume of the notes decrease when he plays up on the neck. I get a similar tone through my Hartke LH500, but with more oomph in the high notes.
