Hey, David! I'm still absolutely loving the Narrows on my Spector, but now I'm looking to upgrade the pickups and electronics in my Ibanez SR506. The stock Bartolini MK1s sound way too mid-scooped and "polite" sounding to my ears and the Ibanez preamp sounds very brittle when the treble is boosted. I like the sound of the Wide Neos on the site, but what do you think would work best to get my bass sound to sound more aggressive and cut through the most for distorted hard rock a la King's X, Tool, RATM, later Dream Theater, Alice in Chains, etc? Possibly overwound neos? Or something else?

Take a listen to the clips posted by Rickett Customs a few pages back in this thread... it doesn't get much better than that.

Hey David - are these on your website/available yet? If so I can't find them.

No, I haven't had a chance to get it on the site yet. But they are available.

Cool - are you able to put these in EMG 45 sized shells?

For a six string? Don't see why not.

My bass is actually a 5, but being a Yamaha, they use their "no one makes this size pickup" which is something like 4.67 X 1.5 - CLOSE to EMG 45 but small gaps lengthwise.

So I'd want a 5 string pickup in a 6 string sized shell. These don't use blades like your other ones right?

Oh yeah, the good old Yamaha pickups.

No, these don't use blades.

Drop me an email and we can discuss it.

For what you're aiming to play, overwound Neos might just do the trick. The standard Wide Neos are very responsive to different fingering techniques. If you play them hard and add a dose of distortion, you'll get a nice thick, aggressive sound.

Another option could be the new humcancelling Jazz Bass pickups that were posted earlier in this thread. Put these in a pair of soapbar shells and you'll give the Nordstrand "Big Splits" a run for their money.

No, not at all. Just been so busy I haven't had time to get them on the website. But I can make them now.

I think I posted this sound clip from the prototype set that was in a Ken Smith Design 5 string Jazz bass with an Aguilar OBP-3. This is direct. They sound even better though an amp, like my Hartke LH-500.

https://soundcloud.com/davidravenmoon/sgd-max-5-string-jazz

I have another set coming that isn't as scooped, so it has more mids.

I also have some exposed pole alnico soapbars coming, in both the hum canceling single coil and humbucker configurations. The humbuckers sound very nice.

The sound clip makes them sound thicker than SWJ's and clearer than JBJ's - true? If this is true then I'd be interested in a set with solid covers. I have a Peavey Millennium Plus J/J and the pups are both J bridge pup length, so I can't have exposed poles.

How are these different than Sidewinders? Are they a split coil? What about that dead spot between the A and D strings?

They are very bright and have a lot of output too. They had more lows and highs than the stock single coils they were replacing.

There is no dead spot because they are not split in the usual sense. There is a separate coil per string. This also means that all the strings sound the same, unlike some split coils when you have an uneven number of strings, i.e., on a 5 you have a 3/2 split.

They are also shielded.

The Sidewinder Js sounded a bit more like standard Jazz pickups. I should have those back soon as well. The new version will probably be using neo magnets.

How much would a long/long bridge & neck pup set cost? Four separate coils?

Hi @SGDDavid Schwab

Can you do a set of neodymium pickup. size 101mm x 19mm??
and i need a ring to use around the pickups to cover some gap that will be on the bass.

My bass is 5 string but i found here on TB the pic of the same bass, but with 4 strings
the pickups are the same model.
Bellow there's link with a pic of the bass. and you will see why i need the ring.
Thank's

David you are awesome. Thanks so much for getting a new pickup out to me so quickly to replace my broken bridge pickup even though I probably broke it myself.

Love the pickups, thanks for the excellent customer service!!!

So that's like a 5 string Jazz size? I don't officially have anything in that size except for the exposed pole alnico pickups. I do have a hum canceling version of those, but neither is on the website yet.

But if you wanted the neos, I could put something together for you.

Well, it sounded like the pickup developed a fault, but without seeing it I have to take your word for it. I'm not sure how you would have broken it.

Glad you like the pickups.

The clips of the new pickups sound really good David.

My hollowbody is off to the finishers - can't wait to hear it with the ND3s!

Have a wonderful Easter.
