Stingray 5 replacement Pups

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Warwick FNA 5 which has developed a fault in the windings near the low B string.

The pickup is the same shape as that which is fitted to the Stingray 5, trad MM shape, twin coil, no mounting "ears".

The bass is going to be sold after I have rectified the problem so I'm looking for a replacement pick up which sounds good but which isn't going to cost the earth.

Suggestions welcomed - 'specially if you can provide a weblink to a vedor with a great deal on the pup that I want. Failing that, general suggestions on manufacturers I should be checking out are very welcome.

thanks,

Scoop.

I'm curious how the pickup developed a fault by one string? Unless they have one coil per string, that's not possible. The windings go all the way across all the strings. Maybe the magnet has a problem?

I've had good experience with the Duncan Basslines ceramic 5 string MM pickups.

You're probably right. The pick up is fine on the EADG strings but sounds like a flatulant camel on the low B. Thinking about it logically, the problem would most likely be the slug rather than the winding.

Thanks for the idiot prod.

Sure it's not the strings? Or maybe it's adjusted too close to the low B? You have to adjust the pickup farther away from the low strings.

Was it always this way?

The pickup height and string gap distances are consistant with general tolerances. I',m a useless electrician but I've been adjusting truss rods and doing my own general set ups etc for over 20 years (i'm 47, playing for 34 years). I'm happy with the idea that the strings are good (I have changed the B string to make sure this is the case). I don't believe that, with the action as it is at the moment, the slug is being in any way "overloaded" magnetically by string proximity.

It's difficult for me to be precise as I own ten basses and this one gets used quite rarely (which is why I intend to sell it when it's sorted) so the problem may have pre-existed and gradually developed over a period of time, but, given how rarely I play this fellow, it "appears" to have arrived quite suddenly.

And your efforts are appreciated; I'm grateful to you for taking the time.
