Dont get me wrong, the preamp sounds fine as they are. but mine died after many years of abuse....
im thinking of getting a used stock one, but just wondering if there are any 'upgrades' from the stock ones?

Seymour Duncan has one.
John East has one.
Nordstrand supposedly has one 30-60 days from being available. |

Thing is my stingray is a japanese model. Yeah, you heard me. Its the 'EX' series that has been out of production for a long time. It plays and sounds fantastic, infact better than alot of usa made rays ive tried.
I bought it used aswell, i highly doubt that MM would be replacing it for me

The East is vol-bass/treble-mid/sweep with a bright mode push/pull on the treble knob. you can get 2 band, and 3 band without the stacked bass/treble too.
Tonally, the East seems warmer, and with the mid sweep more versatile. That said, the Duncan bass has a Duncan ceramic pickup, and the East a Nordstrand alnico pickup.
I'd prefer the East, but it costs a lot more, both can go from warm and fat, to bright and sparkly, or mid aggressive, easily.
What I really like about the East, is you can crank the mids, and use the freq. sweep knob almost like a wah.

Never heard of a Japanese Stingray. Was it a legit model, or a sketchy import?
(I don't have a problem with it being a sketchy import, we have plenty of 'em over here!)

Nordstrand supposedly has one 30-60 days from being available. | I agree that replacing the pre will lower the resale value. For me, though, any mods at all lower the value for any bass I'm looking to buy. I hate modded basses!

Out of stock right now, though. Expecting more in a few weeks.

I would check with EBMM customer service. They havent ever asked me whether I am the original owner. They generally have a policy of making parts available for a charge, if you mail in the "broken" part.
2nd, check ebay. There is always someone parting out some poor stingray or saber. As well as a few NOS parts.

While it was a long time ago, they sold me a replacement 2 band pre for my pre-EB 'Ray when the original (epoxied of course) died. I had to go to an authorized EB dealer which was a lot harder back in those days- this was about a year after they bought Music Man's patents from the bankruptcy sale.
