Stingray Classic Treble Control Picking Up The Radio

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up a new Stingray Classic at GC yesterday and got a really good deal. The bass is awesome.....except for one thing. When I turn the treble all the way up, I'm picking up the radio. I did not notice this at the store. There is not any hum or hiss, just some dang radio station cutting in. If I back the treble off just a hair the radio is gone.
I tried different outlets. I put in a new battery. I have not tried a new cord yet,but will in the next day or two. Any other suggestions? I find it just a little odd that the bass and volume can be turned all the way up and the bass is quiet, but roll up the treble as well and I'm picking up the radio.

I wanted to ask for suggestions before I started looking at returns or a trip back to the factory, if it is something I could fix myself.

Try the new cord. If they are not well shielded they can just act as large antennas. If.your cable is good I bet its a ground issue somewhere on your bass.

Thanks 96. I will try a a better cord later on this week. The one I'm using now is a elcheepo.

Do you live near a radio transmitter tower? That could be why you did not hear this at the store. Very few consumer electronic products are tested for immunity to high power radio transmitters and if you happen to live near one you either live with the issues (do you really need the treble maxed out for example?) or try to fix the bass itself. Hopefully the cable change will do the trick. Otherwise you might need more shielding on the bass, a filter on the output jack, or internal modifications.

I just got a SUB5 with the same 2-band preamp, and it does the same thing. I've just been not turning the treble all the way up but I'd be interested to hear if you find a solution.

Ok, just got back from GC. Took my elcheepo cord and bass. Hooked it up to the same amp in the store.........and no 95.3. I even took a video with me so they wouldn't think I'm crazy. So, I know it's not the bass. I picked up one of the Monster cables to try out when i get home. I will keep you posted.

It's probably a capacitor... that's why dunlop wah pedals do it. Can't really be avoided, if you fix it for one area it gets worse in another. I read about it on their site once.

Used to happened to our guitarist at jam and we had no clue why, but we knew it was the wah, found that out one day trying to find out if their bass wah is true bypass.

Also, it picked up 95.1 here, so....

EDIT: Nope, don't know how to fix it. Sorry.

Just rock along to whatever is on your "radio" and you're good to go.

There's probably a cold solder joint in the wiring that is picking up the radio station. A cold solder joint can act like a detector diode in an old radio. Have the solder joints re-heated/touched up. If that doesn't fix it the better shielding needs to be looked into.

I took my SUB5 to practice last night and also did not pick up any radio. I used my XDR95 wireless but I also tested it with a straight cord to the amp, no radio. I'm going to try it tonight at home with the same cord and see if it changes anything, but I'm happy with it for the time being.

Well I tried. Different cable, new battery, different locations with both bass and amp... around the house and town. Different bass.....yes I exchanged basses. And the results were the same. In my house if I crank up the treble.....I'm going to pick up 95.3. Why does it have to be country? Of course I could always try a different amp or use this as an excuse to get a new one since this bass really farts out my Bronco 40. Set up this bass yesterday. Slight truss rod adjustment, adjusted the string height, intonation, and put on a set of fat beams. Rolled off the treble and good to go.

Tried out a Traben Chaos at a store the other day which had the same issue. If I boosted any of the eq knobs, I would start hearing political talk-radio through the amp. The store clerk who noticed this found it pretty amusing.

I live on a highway and mine will occasionally pick up the truckers' cb radio. But it has only happen on my cheap amp. I never had that problem with my Acoustic b810 or my Markbass cabs. For me, its the amp. My church monitor system picks up radio signals sometimes as well. And I don't even go through the monitors.

Try an RF choke. I'm guessing the battery ground wire, or maybe a jack wire. This, and/or additional electronics bay shielding should help.

Snap Choke Core - RadioShack.com

This is the same concept as placing a choke on an amp cable.

Best of luck,

Bob
