StingRay Ground Problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
I started getting a loud humming noise when plugged in last night. If I touch metal any where on the bass it goes away. When I’m playing with my fingers there’s a popping sound every time I hit the strings.

I looked at the preamp and I didn’t see any loose wires. When I plug my cable into the output jack on the bass there doesn’t seem to be much resistance and I can wiggle the connector on the cable.

My question is can a faulty output jack cause this problem? Also is the bridge supposed to be grounded? Any help would be great.

Yes, the bridge is supposed to be grounded. There should be a wire that runs through the body from under the bridge to somewhere in the electronics cavity.

Did this happen at home, using an electrical outlet that you use all the time, or somewhere else? If it's the latter you might have plugged into a faulty outlet.

Did you try a different instrument cable?

Did you take the cover off the electronics cavity and LOOK at everything? It might very well be your output jack.

Thanks for the reply. I did try a different cable same results. Yes it’s the same outlet I use all the time at home. This does not happen with the other basses I have. I did take the control plate off I did not see anything unusual. I attempted to take the bridge of, but after I removed the screws it was still tight against the wood, so I decided to stop.

I guess I will replace the output jack and see what happens. I just hope it's not something with the preamp.
