Stingray Preamp with Single Coil pbass pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone every tried this combo - Single coil pbass pickup in the normal 1950's location but powered by a Musicman 2 band preamp vs the standard Fender passive controls. Reason I'm asking is I have some spare parts from previous bass builds and some spare time on my hands - you know, "idle hands are the devil's workshop". Just trying to figure out how this would sound.
The pbass pickup is probably a lower resistance value than the musicman (4.5ohms vs 9ish ohms???) and the music man is a humbucker vs the single coil pbass pickup.
Might be interesting, any one out there try anything like this?

You mean 4.5k and 9k. That's a difference of three orders of magnitude. The DCR, and output impedance of the pickup is not what you need to worry about, however, it's the input impedance of the preamp. MM pickups (Traditional ones wired in parallel, anyway.) have a relatively low output impedance. While I am not familiar with the MM preamp's specs off hand, it could be plausible that the input impedance of the preamp is a bit lower than most preamps, since the output impedance the preamp is designed to see at it's input is a little lower than with most pickups. If this is the case, the pickup might sound a little darker with the preamp than it would with other preamps, due to the more direct resistive loading against it. A lot of P bass players like this resistive loading though, so it depends on personal preference. It's a subtle difference anyways.

The impedance is probably a standard 1M Ohms-ish, though.

2band MM has lower Rin, but not drastic (100k or 220k, don't remember right now). Problem is that due "unusuall" configuration (it's single stage inverting amp which is doing EQing as well as buffering), performance of HF EQ is very dependent on pickup Z. It will most certainly work, but it will be different (BTW, 2band MM is sorta' "dark by design", regardless of pickup).
...
To OP, you should try it, it will most certainly work, it's just a matter of whether you'll like it or not.

Good to know, and very interesting.

I figured it would work but wasn't sure if it would be overly dark or overly bright. My tastes lean more to the dark end of the bass world (i.e. Bartolini, DR Black Beauty strings, East preamps, etc.) so it may be an interesting build. Can't say I've ever seen it done so still looking for someone who has tried it to see what their results were, but in any case I'll probably give it a whirl.

I had been thinking of adding a Seymour Duncan SCPB-3 on the neck position of my Stingray. I already have a SD replacing the original, so I don't know if it'd be easier for me to do that... I'm getting a Single Coil P-bass this Christmas anyway
