I posted this in the Geddy Lee Club thread, but haven't got a response yet, and I figured it was worth asking more generally...
Have the stock pickups that come in a Fender Geddy Lee changed?
On most older GLs I've seen, the pickups have pole pieces that stick up slightly out of the covers and seem to have a beveled edge. I recently bought a brand new sunburst GL from my local Long and McQuade that's probably not more than 1-2 years old (I've never checked though), and the pickups look different. The pole pieces are flush with the cover and flat on top without the beveled edge.
So, does anybody know if Fender has started using different pickups in these basses or what?

I have played one at GC as recently as 2011, but unfortunately did not inspect the pickups on that close of a level. I'll be going by one hopefully within the next week, if they have one in stock, I'll look at it and post my findings. |

My guess is they're the same pickups. They've probably just changed the shape of the pole pieces. Maybe, the extra grinding didn't make a difference in sound, but cost more to produce. Maybe, people complained about them being raised. I find them a little odd, but I have two sets of the pickups. I think they sound really good.

Maybe I'm just imagining the difference in tone though... I've been exceptionally nitpicky lately.

Fender is more interested in making money than making the best instruments.
