Strange humming situation

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, I'm having some strange problem with my epiphone les paul (guitar, I know, but bear with me!). With hands on or off the strings there's no hum, but when I put a finger on the chrome neck pickup casing I get a huge buzz, but then when I put another hand on the strings it goes away! I'm figuring this must be to do with grounding/earthing (something I'm really clueless about) so no doubt it'll end up in a repair shop, but if anyone has a quick fix for me that'll save me time and $$ that'd be great!

Also, previously I had been getting no sound from the pickup, and then I would either tap it, or thump the strings pretty hard or wind down the volume pot and quickly turn it to full- all of these would make a bit of a pop through the amp, and occasionally bring it back to life. The same thing could stop it working while all was well. This seems to have disappeared since I tried fixing the soldering joint of the grounding on the pickup case. (it was messy)

It sounds like grounding.
If you ground it by also touching the strings, and it goes away....then you need to do something like that on the inside. You should look at how the other pickup's cover is grounded, and do it the same way on the problem cover. Should be pretty easy. Check it out and let us know.
