Strange pickup problem

Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys i recently refinished a bently p-bass clone bass guitar, it all went really smooth actually untill just now, i get no sound when i pluck the strings, the pickups are however still working and make noise when i tap them with my finger, however they will only pick up the sound of a string when something magnetic is touching the pickup (another string, screwdriver), this was the first time ive ever had to mess with the pickups in a bass that i have owned, the bass was working fine before i refinished it so i know that it works im just confused as hell, any ideas?

There can only be a few problems here, so it should be easy to fix.
  1. Get an ommeter and check all connections in the wiring are 'solid'. You may have cock handedly solded something badly, so no signal carry
  2. Check the diagram below to make 100% sure every wire is where it should be. If you have solded a ground in the wrong place, then that would kill the sound
  3. If that fails, check the cable and amp, could they be broken?
  4. If all the above fails, then the pickup is bust (it does happen). Go and get a new one. I personally have a fetish for Seymour Duncan 'Quater Pounder' pickups

Mmmm, not sure about that diagram - correct me if I'm wrong.

The tone ground-bleed won't work as the chassis of the tone pot is isolated.

The chassis of the vol pot is isolated, although there is a ground-bleed direct to ground, but as-is, the chassis is isn't grounded.

Am I wrong?
