strange sound character on e string with bridge J pickup

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having a strange little problem with my dimarzio model j's. On the e string there's a strange fuzzy muddy character to the sound when I play with fingers coming from the bridge pickup, it's not a huge problem, but is just a bit annoying. Doesn't seem to be due to distance from the string as it remains right up until the pole piece is too far away to pickup the string. Anyone got an idea what it is? something to do with shielding? The A string has it a little too, but the D and G are fine.

Hum, pole peice adjustment didnt fix it. How long ago did you add the pups? Might the E & A string have gone deader since then? Or battery for preamp if yours has such, gotten weaker? Good solder joints for wiring the pup in? All wires properly connected? Dimarzio J arent as focussed sounding as some J's but I wouldnt call them muddy or fuzzy prone if pole peices are a little above top cover. I think they could have a little bit of tone smearing proneness with some distortions or overdrives though. While this can add a sense of drive to the sound, it can also get to the point of muddy or lack of articulation to the sound sometimes.

Lets see, you played around with adjusting pole peice hieghts. And I assume you also tried lowering the pup just a tad once max articulation for pole peice adjustment was made? Hopefully its just that the E & A string have become deader since the pup install or battery is getting weak if has onboard preamp.

I had the same problem with Di Marzio J in the past. It is because the string is to close to the pole piece. Press down the E string on the last fret, the distance must no less then 2.6 mm/2.8 mm

Thanks for the advice guys, After some experimentation, I'm pretty certain it's interference/noise messing with the sound rather than the suggested factors. I tried it on another amp in an empty room and it's fine. Moved the amp in there and did the same, so It's probably since the amp was situated in a room with a ton of other electrical equipment, lots of things plugged into the same chain etc. So I guess I'll have to move it all to another room. It's a strange sound, like a weird synth fizzle to the note, and only comes from the bridge pu.
