String Balance help needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I've recently started playing in a band again, after leaving the bass alone for about 10 years(!). Anyway, I dusted off the old Westone Concorde Bass 1 (P Bass type with 32" scale) and gave it a bit of an overhaul, but I noticed at practise time that when playing, the E string has significantly more volume than the A string. D and G are about the same as the E (but they're just on there for show as far as I'm concerned). I don't recall this ever having been an issue before, but it's been a long time since I played bass properly. It has a P bass type pickup, but with adjustable hex head pole pieces. Their raised a little under the A and D, presuably to address any string imbalances, but it just seems a bit wierd. The only thing I can think is that it's a wierd string gauge with an over fat E, but I don't know what gauge it is. Is this just a normal thing with P Basses?
I play with a plectrum if that makes any difference?

FWIW:

not unusual cause of the larger mass of the string. You resolve it by adjusting the pup height and poles to get the desired outcome. Just make sure you're string height and intonation are set first or you're wasting you time messing with the pup. If you changed strings and they're different gauge you'd need to reintonate anyway and check to make sure strings are seated properly in the nut before doing that.

First things first... new set of strings (if you haven't already). DR Low Riders have excellent string to string balance. Then, if you still have a volume problem, adjust the pickups.

Good luck!
