alright -
im gettin a new bass and i want to start learning how to change pickups ect ect....
so on my old squier p i would like to remove the pickups and wiring so i can refinish it
ive searched for about 25 mins on google and through the archived topics and such and nothing helped - maybe its too noob of a question
id like to be able to re install them once ive finished painting it so dont just say rip them out
im gonna try it first on my old fender starcaster so i can afford to make a mistake there but on the squier id like to keep it in playing condition

thanks for your help

I guess I'll answer. Just unscrew everything and put it back the same way you took it out. I'd probably take a lot of pictures documenting how everything was put in so you have a reference, since the refin will probably (hopefully) take you longer than just a few minutes to do, and you may forget how everything was set. You may have to desolder the pups from the wiring depending on how the body is routed.

In any event, you may want to spend more than 25 minutes researching this. Fender makes wiring diagrams/parts schematics available on their site, you might want to start there.

Best resource for wiring diagrams that I've found.

Don't forget to learn to solder properly (tinning the iron and components first, etc)

Regardless of who is providing a schematic, disassemble it as you see it in your working bass. Desolder the connections, especially the pickups at the pots, and document what you're doing, making your own diagram. This will start getting you familiarized to wiring and will also enable you to match it to the wiring diagram at Fender, or wherever you're finding your diagrams. I have a list on my site here: http://www.buzzardsbass.com/electron.../diagrams.html

I STRONGLY recommend these two books:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Make-Electri...7734377&sr=8-4

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Guitar-Playe...7734377&sr=8-4

It is all very easy, go and buy a 40W (no less!) soldering iron and a few electronics projects and get going! After your soldering is practised you will be ready to roll!
