Stupid question

Sign in to disble this ad
Every active bass that I have owned has had
a passive pickup/pickups and active preamp combination

I've been looking into EMG's active replacement pickups with harness for my P/J
http://www.emgpickups.com/products/category/24/2

I understand that with active pickups you do not have the option of a passive/active switch

Does the input jack complete the circuit? or is it sucking juice out of the 9 volt 12/7?

It turns on when a lead is inserted into the jack. That's if it's been wired correctly. I've seen some that aren't and kill a battery in days...

1. With active pickups you DO NOT have the option of an active/passive switch. This is NOT a good thing IMHO. By reason of Murphy's Law I always have more warm fuzzies when I know there is a knob I can pull or switch I can throw that keeps the music going if my battery should suddenly Cack it in the middle of a gig.

2. There is supposed to be a switch on the input jack. (often it's just the "ring" terminal that grounds to the shaft of a normal mono plug to ground the battery terminal and turn on the bass. Some are weird. My G&L for example works without a battery in passive mode, but nevertheless keeps sucking juice in passive mod. Just something it does. It does disconnect when you pull the cord out.

What are the tonal differences between active and passive pickups?
