I love everything about my new 4 string maple roscoe beck-

The only thing I could think to add to my rig to make it sound even better is a preamp

any of you fender RB owners have any suggestions for out-board preamps?

Have any of you installed an on-board pre?

Well, the Fender ADPV I had uses a similar-design humbucker in the bridge position, and I found the Sadowsky onboard pre worked really well with that. If you like a "modern" sound, the Sadowsky is one of the better pre's out there. On the flip side, now that I'm finding Audere is not compatible with Fender SCN pickups due to the internal grounding design of the pickups, I would recommend against buying an Audere for yours until/unless someone here can confirm that it is for sure compatible with the particular pups in the RB.

I installed an OBP-1 in my RB5 a few years back. Worked well, though I eventually decided that the bass itself was nothing special (I've played better RB5s than the one I owned, which lacked resonance / life). You also can't go wrong with a Sadowsky pre, either onboard or outboard.

I hook mine up to a Sadowsky Outboard. I didn't want to mess with the bass, and I use it with all my other basses, as well. Great pre.

My old RBV killed with a sadowsky outboard pre. Wish I still had that bass.

thanks guys!

when i plugged the rb into my sansamp bass driver, I didn't get the quite the tone i was looking for as when i plugged my frankenstein (w/audere) into the sansamp (which sounded amazing with a band)

I JUST bought a new sadowsky pre/di on ebay

i'm thinking my chain will be: rb4 -> sadowsky -> sansamp -> compression -> amp

...thoughts?

also having the signal run through two 9 volt preamps- is that the same effect as if i had run it through just one 18v preamp?

I would always run the bass directly into the Outboard. If you use the built-in DI, it will be cleaner.

Don't use the sansamp and sadowsky together, you'll just drain your tone. If you want a big snarly faux SVT use the sansamp. If you want fat and clean use the sadowsky. Never both.

You can also play with the comp before and after the sadowsky. It will sound quite different.
