Suggestion for Ibanez '85 Destroyer PU replacement...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys...

I've had an Ibanez '85 Destroyer for a few months now, and have barely played it as the pickups sound... well... crap! I use an Ibanez ATK 300 for my primary bass and really want a pickup that sounds similiar to that - so I can switch onstage etc. I'm not partial to any companies, etc, so any advice would be sincerely welcomed.

Thanks!!!

Hello there...fellow aussie... Have an 82 Destroyer II and the pickups are better than my 75 fender P bass and 70's Rick 2001, both in sound and output. Sure i will be shouted down for such herasy. Actualy prefer this bass over the other two in ALL respects. There is an issue with the bridge end pickup loading the neck pickup down on the 82 model. Unsure of other years. You can tell the difference between output with the bridge pickup volume at 7 in place of 10, ie it gets louder as you turn down the bridge pickup. Sure there are pickups to replace yours, active or passive, lookforward to others comments.
Regards.

Thanks Eight_Stringer!!! Maybe there is an Earthing problem or something with my pickups? I've never been much of a tech head so I trip out easily when I'm trying to use this bass, as the knobs don't seem to do as they supposed to and the volume does change as I increase it, sometimes going quieter when it should be going louder. I just figured that instead of trying to fix it, I'd just look at some new pickups and kill two birds with one stone. The bass does feel SO good to play though.

Anyone else able to give me any suggestions on some sweet pickups to replace my old ones in the Destroyer?

Does yours have the P/J pickup layout?

I just put EMGs in mine and it sounds sick.

From memory, it's got the P/J layout. Yeah, pretty sure it does.

What EMG's did you put in yours?
If you don't mind answering too, what kind of sound are you getting out of it?

Cheers mate!

I put the standard EMP P/J set in. The one that comes with the control set and whatnot.

Compared to the stock pickups the EMGs are a bit quieter (believe it or not) but a lot more clear. Definitely more hi-fi and straight forward sounding than the "old school" sound of the stock Ibanez pickups. While I miss the sound of the stock Ibanez pickups I think the EMGs are an overall improvement.
