| Suggestions to get the Bernard Edwards Stingray Tone

I'm a newbie to Stingrays. I recently discovered Bernard Edwards, and really dig the tone he gets from his Ray. A real Stingray is a bit pricey for my tastes, so I'll probably try to build my own.
But I'm confused about all the different pickups and preamps available for Rays. I'd appreciate some guidance on what electronics to install to best mimic that classic 70's Ray tone.
