suggestions on how to convert 9v to 18v

Sign in to disble this ad
so im trying to go to 18v on my noll preamp to get some extra head room for when im in series mode with my pickups.

i took an extra battery clip. striped the wires on it and wired them together and cliped this onto the +/- of the two bateries to put them in series.

problem is now i have no sound on active mode. any suggestions on alternatives, i figured what i tried would be better that just using wires from one battery to another.

To run two 9 volts in series, you have to wire the positive from one to the negative on the other, and then use the other other leads (+/- from seperate batteries) as per normal.

First, I'd make sure the Noll will run at 18v--do you see anything in the Noll documentation to indicate that it will take 18v, or that running it at 18v will necessarily give you more headroom? Different preamps will handle extra voltage differently, I expect.

Second, make sure the harness is hooked up right. The simplest way to do it (reversibly, even!) is actually to take three 9v clips and wire them in a circle, red wire to black wire. Then plug batteries into two of the clips and plug the other one into the existing battery clip.

Do you have a multimeter? It would be a good idea to check that your battery setup is actually producing 18V before hooking it up to the pre-amp. Your description does suggest that no juice is getting through.

Cleaver especially considering the battery to battery jack connections inverted the polarities…

Some noll preamps running at 18 volts use a more complex output jack to split the voltages going to the preamp so the preamp sees +9 and -9 volts instead of 18 and 0.

hmmm. well when i got the Noll it came with the standard output jack, all the parts necessary were included. i know some of the preamps with parametric eq use a different output jack.

so should i go with mikeZ's suggestion to try and fix my problem?
