suggestions for jazz pups for fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
I need good, affordable pickups for a 4 string fretless bass that can support a realy woody sound, because the fingerboard and nut are ironwood, and an adjustable wooden bridge. i need them to be bar magnet, instead of pole piece, sound good for both round wound, and flat/taper wound (witchever is used on the uprights), have a really jazzy sound, but a little versatility would be nice.

You might want to take a look at Bill Lawrence J45's...although they don't have a bar, they have 9 poles which works well with just about any string spacing, also they are fairly cheap ($60/each I think).

Bill Lawrence J-45 and Delano JC 5 HE are my current faves for fretless J, both full bodied yet detailed above, very "natural" sounding and flexible too since they don't seem to be scooped or exaggerated anywhere.

is that $60 for a pair, or per single coil, are they the same size as regular 4-string j sets?

wow! just checked e-bay, and some bill-lawrence j 45s are going for $50 for the set! i think this could be the best of both worlds for what i want. i prefer to see pole pieces, but i wanted bar, because i wanted it to correctly get the sound, even if i routed slightly off center. thanx!!!!

Here's a song using my J45's.

Bill used this for a Demo for the J45 for a while.
