Suggestions for MIA P upgrades

Sign in to disble this ad
Soon I'll be replacing the pickguard on my MIA P (purely cosmetic reasons) so I thought this would be a good time to do any upgrades. I'm quite happy with everything as it is now, but maybe someone has an idea for upgrades (pots, jacks, etc) that make sense. I'm happy with the stock pups, unless there's a really strong argument for something else. Anyway.... all thoughts and suggestions welcome. Cheers.....

None if you like it. Don't upgrade just to upgrade. What is your sound missing?

I agree. You really shouldnt upgrade anything unless you're trying to go for some specific sound. Even then, you can manipulate your own sound enough through technique and the use of different strings to get there. MIA Pbasses are amazing workhorses that are capable of producing some of the best bass tones known to man.

I'd say if you're happy with it, there's no need to mod. But hey, just because you're happy eating burgers and pizza doesn't mean you shouldn't try sushi. And you might be happy driving a Kia, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't appreciate a BMW if you drove one.

My 2004 MIA Precision has two additions: a Hipshot drop tuner on the E string (which anyone can install), and a Lindy Fralin pickup. Both are worthwhile, but many won't need the drop tuner. The Am. Ser. pickups are quite good, and I still have mine in a project fretless P. Great classic tone. But I think many players would prefer the Fralin or something similar. I certainly do. It has much higher output, and greater clarity everywhere but especially in the lows. It hits harder, yet maintains a vintage vibe. It records exceptionally well. So if you find yourself wanting something like that, give it a try. If not, cool. It's a fantastic bass out of the box.

Thanks for all the replys so far. I'm not looking to modify anything for the sake of doing it, as I'm quite happy with everything on this stock instrument (except the pickguard!). Just wondering if there were any "no brainer" upgrades. Keep the comments coming....

Nope. They come from the factory ready to rock. Don't change a thing, IMO.
