Suggestions for a Peavey T-40

Sign in to disble this ad
This isn't mine, but if you don't know what they look like

I'd like to know of some cheap (but good) replacement pickups for this bass. I'm more a fan of "old school" tone if that means anything. I'm open to anything though. They are big pickups, how could I fit smaller pickups in there? I don't know, I'd like to know of some cheap replacement options since Peavey doesn't make these basses/pickups anymore.

Would something like these work:

http://cgi.ebay.com/P-BASS-BASS-GUIT...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/Wilkinson-Lic-Pi...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Vintage-62-RI-...QQcmdZViewItem

How could I get them to fit in such a large area?

Do you currently own a T-40? You can get a wide range of tones out of those things. Easy to get a very convincing P-bass sound out of it.

The pups are one of the coolest parts of the T-40. Why would you want to replace them unless they are completely shot or perhaps you were gonna go with Darkstars? No harm intended but I am curious to know why you are interested in changing them.

Uhm, they're broke. Ooops forgot to say that part. One of them is dead, the other one has an annoying pop to it, I've worked on it, had a couple pros work on it, it's not the wiring, the pickups are shot.

I just need a replacement: I'd like Darkstars, but fundage is lowww.

The guy that designed these pickups has a stock of them at his shop. If you go on the peavey site to the bass forum and post a where can I get replacements for these he will answer you back with his info. I don't remember his name offhand but he has all kinds of parts for the t40's and t60's. If you can get replacements for these they really do sound killer.

By the way that is an original run T-40 not the cheaper made second colored version.

I just remembered the guys name is Chip Todd.

Cool, any clue what they'd cost me? I'm currently job hunting so cash flow isn't great, and when I do get money it's got to go to "important" things. But when some cash frees up...

You could go with a single Dark Star. Two are better but one is still great. Also you might be able to find someone who swapped out to Dark Stars and still has the old T40 pickups that might part with them for a reasonable price.

Not sure what he gets for them but his prices are usually very reasonable. You can usually find him on the peavey suport bass forum . Dark Stars are going to set you back about 200.00 ea plus installation. The Peavey replacements should be much less.

Agreed. I have a triple pack of T40's and the last thing I'd change is the pickups. Except for Darkstars, which my 81 will get in short order.

Chip Todd id the T40 designer and he can be found here
www.peaveyt60.com
along with a lot of other great T40/60 info.
