I know they only come stock with preamps, but does anyone have experience using these in passive mode? I'm considering pairing up the bridge pup with a precision pup in a passive P/J bass. Would it be lively enough to compete with the P? How do these sound when run passive? Is the output good?

FWIW:

had a pair of Shur Shur designed J's, there in Dimento's J experiment in FAQ. Seems they were 4 pole.

Probably going to harmony central and pulling out the early reviews for the duluxe bass would be one of the better sources.

I do not see these pickups mentioned in the FAQ section (I looked there first), and I've searched and found no comments on their passive characteristics.

I've actually used a 4-pole jazz pickup in my 1982 Fender Jazz. although, my pole pieces seem huge compared to the ones in the picture. my pickup looks like a single coil version of a music man or stingray. i got mine from Choppersmusic store on eBay. it was meant to be used with active circuitry, but i wanted to try it out and boy did it make a beast of my jazz. it sounds so aggressive i cant use roundwound strings on it because the attack is too harsh. but man, the amount of response coming from these things are amazing. it's like they hit the note before you do. the only thing i would worry about with those pickups are signal loss with string bends and such. the pole pieces might not grab everything. but if they're similar to mine, you'll love 'em.
