I've hung a pup above the strings for testing on occassion and it doesn't make any difference. It's not very practical for obvious reasons, interferes with playing and requires a special mount.

If you have a mag on both sides then there could be issues related to adverse effects on string vibraton - cancellation, whatever. Never had a Ric horseshoe but seems the strings pass through those.

Yeah, it's exactly the same above as below. And like you said, if you have a pickup under the strings, the magnets might conflict.
