Suspected Defective EMG 40DC - need feedback

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello alll,

I just purchased a second hand EMG 40DC - installed it and have the following problems, all of which to me indicate a broken pickup:

1. It sound like an EMG Jazz pickup
2. It buzzes horrendously
3. It has about 50% the output it should

I have used 40DCs since the 90s, so I know what they should sound like. I tapped the FRONT coil awith a small screwdriver and heard no sound when plugged in, but when I tapped the BACK coil a loud sound came through. I am fairly certain the front coil is not working, which would lead to the three issues above no?

The seller has agreed to refund my money, but I wanted to get a sanity check just in case it was in fact fine and I simply screwed up the wiring.

All solder joints look good and my mutlimeter shows everything is as it should be. Since EMG humbuckers sum the outputs of the two coils internally, there is only one signal wire, so if THAT conenction was messed up, I should have NO sound, as you can't wire it to use only one coil.

Any thoughts/feedback/cofirmations/etc are greatly appreciated.

J

no, you've diagnosed it correctly. there's no way any outside factor could cause this problem.
