i want to get a MIM Fender Deluxe P but I don't want active electronics. can i get passive stuff to put in? there are 4 knobs on there now, and i want them to control P volume, J volume, P tone and J tone as if it were a passive bass. is this possible ?

Certainly. The pickups aren't active, so if you pull out the preamp it is a passive bass.

I'm doing this to a Squier Deluxe Jazz, V, V, T, T as well as a series/parallel switch. See my thread with a lot of good info and wiring diagrams
I just got my pots the other day, and wire, too. Will rewire it all from scratch.

Dummy question...active to passive mod

You will probably have to change the pots. And you will need a couple of caps for the tone controls, but other than that it should be easy.

A very inexpensive change really.

Go to Fender.com and look under wiring diagrams. They will have the layout and a parts list.

I thought I saw a wiring kit for sale in the TB classifieds in the accessories section. (not by me)

It might be a better idea to find a bass that already has passive electronics. I mean, you're just shelling out cash for a pre-amp you're gonna pull from it anyways. Not only that, but there's a sizable cavity left in the bass (probably... I know the Jag basses have pretty big routes) to house all the electronics you just pulled. That means less mass in the body when compared to another p-bass.

It just seems like a waste of your time and money. Have a blast if you do it tho. It'll definitely be custom...

The Jag bass has an active/passive switch. Maybe you can rig on of those up to the P bass somehow.

$.02

the only other similar bass is well over $1000 and doesn't come in black and i'm a black body black pickguard on maple kinda guy so it's a much cheaper way to get the kind of bass i want, so i dig the idea. i'll check out the active passive switch though, but still it will only cost like $20 to put passive stuff in.
