ive been playing bass or a few years now but hav never bothered with more than 2 control knobs. if theres 4 but no switch what do they all do? is it worth having a switch on a bass?

There are more possibilities for four pots and a switch than I'd care to explain.

You would have to give us the model of the bass so we can look it up.

I would be tempted to say that the most common configuration would be Volume-Volume-Bass-Treble-Pickup Selector, or Volume-Blend-Bass-Treble-Pickup Selector.

Look at mfg website for the bass. It should give info on what the controls are. Like line6man said theres too many possibilities for the huge amount of basses out there with more then two knobs. Some even have 3-5 switches plus lotsa knobs.

There are so many options with 4 pots, even more so if you used stacked pots.

Id say a really common 4 knob setup is volume, blend, mid, stacked treble/bass. Some of the posts can also be push pull like the volume for active/passive and the mid for frequency selection.

normally, if there's 4 knobs (and a battery), then two knobs control volume and pickup selection, and the other two are bass and treble active EQ.

if you have 4 knobs and no battery, they're most likely just volume and tone for each pickup.
