Question switched to passive

Sign in to disble this ad
I play a DeArmond Pilot 4 string, and i just switched out the overly complicated and poorly designed active electronics for a three
knob jazz bass setup -2 vol-1 tone-output.

This makes the jazz pickup smoother and the p-pickup punchier so i love it.But i have a bit a buzz when i brighten the tone and run high frequencies.....any ideas

also anyone use emg select pickups??????? if so how are they

EMG Select pickups are pretty good. Some love 'em, some hate 'em. You might be getting the buzz from the J pickup only. Do you get it when you solo that pickup? It's normal for single coil pickups to buzz.

the buzz is mostly from the tone knob, but it's decreased by turning up the p pickup

FWIW:

if the J is a single coil then it's probably going to hum, especially with trebles elevated. If you can remove the cover of the pup you can rule out it being a J HB. It should drop significantly when you touch the strings. Most guys who play singles adjust their technique to maintain contact with the strings.

It probably "seemed" to decrease because increasing the P would in effect lower the frequency response and over-ride the J volume wise.

Sometimes a pre will reduce hum but could be you just didn't get the wiring right.
