Question Switching Out fender MIM J-Bass Pick Up's

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a MIM Fender Jazz new with majority I paid off
and then Parent's paid off the rest for Christmas,
but I feel I need to trade out the pick-up's in it.

I've played it and it seems 2 be lacking
...umph,
so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions
on Pick-Up's i'd be looking For with this bass.

I plan to play mainly Hair Metal,
Glam Rock and sleeze,
as this will be my main bass for one of my bands.

I was looking at Seymour Duncans in particular
Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder SJB-3
http://www.seymourduncan.com/product...b3_quarterpou/

and

Seymour Duncan Hot STK-J2
http://www.seymourduncan.com/product...kj2_hot_for_j/

any suggestions of good but non-expensive alternatives,
except EMG, as I'm not really a fan,
and active as again, they don't appeal too me,
i prefer passive.

At the moment I don't have a rig as I've been spending my money
on my two basses, so that's my purchase
before the P/U's, so that isn't a factor at the moment.

Sorry for the length of post and thank you in advance for any advice you may offer.

BDL

SD QP's are always a good bet.
Reasonably priced, with good punch.
I have them on my P.

I think so.
There are sound clips on the Seymour Duncan website, why don't you listen to them and make a decision from there.
DiMarzio makes some affordable pickups that are highly regarded, also. Jazz and Ultra Jazz.

I switched out my stock pickups for a set of Dimarzio's model J's. Those are basically humbuckers in single coil format, and how awesome those are!

I know the umph your talking about, and those pickups deliver just that. Lots of definition while being able to deliver some in your face rock tone.

There reasonably priced too.

as far as i've seen there hasn't been any sound clips available for the bassline series, and the DiMarzio's if all their model's have a similar sound which is most lykly applicable but with differences they do sound rather good

Long ago, I changed out the pickups in my MIM Jazz bass with SD Quarter Pounders. I liked the original Fenders better. Have you tried different strings? IMO the pickups in the MIM Fenders are extremely capable and highly underappreciated. My advice: save your money.

I would go for something more 'traditional' J sounding. The humbuckers lack punch - they are kinda polite sounding although quiet. The hot pickus have a big low mids boost and that masks the hi's and true low's. They just get all boomy. To my way of thinking you are better off with something like the Antiuity 1 or the Duncan SJB-1 of even the stock Fender MIA pickup, present your amp with a full range and punchy signal, then use the rig to dial in the heft.

whats your amp setup look like? maybe you should think about upgrading the amp before doing modifications to your instrument. i thought i should change out my stock p/u's on my mim p deluxe special. the p pickup sounds muddy and the j pickup sounds a little weak. but, really thats just nitpicking and in reality it sounds fine. i said it before and ill say it again. you need an amp that your not going to have to fight with to be able to play with proper technique/feel.

at the moment switching out the P/U's is just contemplation, as i said in the original post, i don't have a rig right now, but it's the planned purchase before i decide on switching out the P/U's
