Switching out pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a Peavey Milestone bass I got for cheap, and I was considering switching out the first J pickup with some Precision pickups, but keeping the bridge J. Besides the obvious pickguard issue, what other issues might I encounter trying to do this, and how easy would it be to do? I'm pretty sure I have enough room in the bass to put the pickups in. Here is a link to the bass http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Peavey+-...=1218101784202

Peavey makes several versions of the Milestone, so it is possible that the body has a generic route that a P-Pickup will fit in. If it doesn't you will have to route the body for a wider P-pickup. The accuracy of the route is not essential as you will cover it with a pickguard, but the final positioning of the pickup will be inorder to allign the poles with the strings. It is also possible that the pickguard is already available from Peavey for your conversion. I believe the Milestone 1 pickguard would work. So I would say this is not a terribly difficult mod if you have the most basic of wood and electrical(soldering)skills.

Alright well I think I'm going to buy some DiMarzio Model P's in creme and put them on it along with some black knobs. That bass in the picture is only the same model, not the same color.

I was on Ebay last night. I think the pickguard you will want is from a Milestone III.

No, the Milestone III is the bass I have now, with the J pickups. It looks like the Peavey Milestone II has the P pickups.

Edit: It looks like Pickguard Heaven sells a Milestone II pickguard, but they require a tracing, which I don't have.

I have the Milestone IV. It's a P-bass, basically. Or was, rather.

You could just ask for a Milestone IV guard from Peavey. Too bad you need this now, I'd have sent you mine after modifying my bass. I could still send you the part that goes around the pickup.
