sx 5 string jazz pickups learning the hard way

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey bass players
long story short .. I decided since I have a set of barts in my sx 5 string at the moment I'd see if I couldn't remedy the whole sx pole peices sticking up situation that made me get the barts in the first place

anyone who has read about the sx basses knows that the pole peices stick out alot .. and the wuss that I am I just can't handle it ..

I don't like the tape over the top solution either .. I need smooooth

I've pulled the magnets off the back of the pickups and gotten enough wax out so that they should just drop on out but it seems MR SX has glued the bobbins in .. any ideas ?

the only thing that springs to mind at present is the idea of some how getting some black plastic and making a shim for want of a better word for the top of the pickup .. ie making it thicker so it will be level with the poles ?

I'd really just like to pull the bobbin out though and do it the orignal way .. anyone done this ?

I had the crazy through of getting some different magnets and seeing if I can hear a difference between the same pickup with a different magnet .. I'm guessing they are ceramic at the moment so an alinco or a neo or something .. just for the hell .. gotta love tinkering

thanks for reading

I tried to take apart an SX pickup. I think the bobbins are glued to the tops of the covers.

If you just want to lower the poles to be flush with the top of the cover you can probably use a couple of small sockets and a 2" C-clamp to do it. The bobbins are one piece and the pole pieces are in holes, so you won't kill the coil by moving them since the wire isn't wrapped around the magnets.

hey glenn .. yeah thats what I was thinking but for some reason my gentle nudge moved all the pole peices but the ones at the extreme ends .. so I was starting to think that the wire is actually tight around the end poles and holding them in place ?

maybe I'll have to have a closer look .. i'd really rather not work it out by breaking them ahhaha .. its most often the way I learn

thanks again
