| | | | SX (Essex) Precision pickups vs. Original '62

Like a lot of other SX owners, I find the stock P pickups surprisingly high quality. However, I do find them a bit too much like SD Quarter Pounders; it's the "on steroids" thing. I play mostly blues, folk-rock, etc. with this bass, and I find it pointless to have to turn the tone knob about 90% off to mellow it out sufficiently. I'd like more subdued, less Entwhistleque highs, but the same *hot* output, really FAT lows and punchy low mids. And, "earthiness"... *no* Bartolini or EMG cleanliness, thank you.
(Also, I'm well acquainted with flatwounds, and have them on a different bass. This one is my "Precision with roundwounds" bass. So, please don't suggest flats.)
Original '62?
or, perhaps...
Dimarzio P?
I love the stock pickups in my '03 MIM Jazz (they're middy and loud). So, maybe MIM P pickups, courtesy of ebay?? |

I don't think the MIM pu will be that much of a change from your SX, but I'll sell you mine cheap. I would say though, I think you would be much better served going with either the Dimarzio or the Fender '62.
There is a thread in this section somewhere (search??) where someone and I can't remember who, did a comparison between the SD, Dimarzio, and the 62... Sound clips provided.
edit...
Found it SPB-3 vs. DP122 vs. '62 Original

Found it SPB-3 vs. DP122 vs. '62 Original | Thanks a lot for finding that thread. My main concern was how those compared *against the SX pickup*. As far as the MIM pickup, I am considering it because the one in my MIM Jazz (as mentioned) at least has a "throaty" quality without having sizzling & crispy (to me) highs. I really don't want a scooped, or overly gentle vintage tone. If I decide to go for your MIM pickup, I'll PM you. Thanks again. |

The very reason I love my SX best (sizzling and crispy highs) and am not impressed with my MIM Fender pickup (dull kind of rolled off quality) seems to be EXACTLY the reasons that you want the opposite of what I like! yeah, I can see that! |

(It's just not the sound I want for this bass.) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
