SX Short scale fretless "P" bass pickup replacement

I don't have the bass yet but it is a short scale old headstock "P" bass. Are there any lower cost (under $75) replacement "P" pickups that are a direct fit without having to do any cutting? Thanks

Seymour Duncan SPB-1 or SPB-2 or SPB-3. Really, any P style pickup should fit. Duncan's are a good, inexpensive option.

It really depends on the tone you seek. I have that exact bass, but fretted and I have a DiMarzio Model P in it which I really like. I have to say though that I also have SX shortie J bass with Model J pups and I like it alot better... its more ballsy.

I put an older "standard" pickup (ceramic mags and slugs) out of a Mexi-P in mine. To be honest, I didn't expect much but it sounds great. Nice fat classic P tone. I've also been pleased with GFS, though not used in this bass.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering about pickup fit as I have heard there are problems with other "P" bass parts fitting properly.

Everything that would fit a standard P will fit the SX shortscale, except for the obvious such as the pickguard.

I have been playing bass for over 35 years and in that time have learned to take nothing for granted...even what may seem to be "obvious". I knew about the pickguard situation but I thought I had heard there were issues with other parts fitting too. Hence my question. It has been a very long time since I bought a production bass, normally I have my basses custom built. But I wanted something I could take any where and not have to worry about it as much and I may or may not perform some upgrades. I have heard a lot of good things about Rondo basses.

I'm a fan of the Bartolini 8S and Duncan Antiquities. The Fender '62 RI P pickup ain't to shabby either.

Yeah, its good not to make assumptions.

I have modded my SX shortie p to the point where the only thing stock is the body wood and neck wood. The tuners, bridge and pickup are interchangeable with Fender. The pots are mini pots, but you should still be able to get larger pots in the control cavity.

Thanks Bassist, that is what I need to know...the interchangeability of parts on the SX basses.
