SX Stingray upgrades

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but I seriously don't have time to do a search. My wife and I don't have the Internet at home, so whenever I get a chance to get online I only have about 5 minutes at a time. So now that I told everybody my life story I have a few questions.

I have a four string SX Stingray, and I want to upgrade it a little. I'd like to get a new pickup and a new preamp in the near future. I'm not sure what kind of pickup or preamp I need. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of a Seymour Duncan Bassline pickup w/ a Aguilar ODB-3(?) preamp. I play hardcore metal. But my main goal is to get the bass to work well for classic rock.

I'm assuming that any pickup that is a direct replacement for a Musicman Stingray is also a direct replacement for my SX........am I correct?

Is the Aguilar ODB-3(?) preamp a good match with the Seymour Duncan bassline pickup? And will it work with my SX bass?

Also, is there a direct replacement for the pickguard for this bass, or do I need to get one custom made? I'm not too into the pickguard that came with it anymore.

I appreciate any answers that someone could give me. Feel free to PM me with answers if you want. Thanks!

Nobody knows because the SX Stingray is rare. Be a pioneer and let us know what you find out.

Found a site based out of Spain that has them, too bad I don't read Spanish too well... looks like they ship to the US though.

You would have to check the physcal size but the MM4.2 would be my choice.

For a preamp I'd go Audere - more expensive than other options, but then again if you want good quality sound, be prepared to pay.

the MM4.2 is a direct replacement the MM4.3 would be my choice, however (would require a little bit of routing to fit the dummy coil)...but with the MM4.3 you can run a noiseless single coil. Of course I'd have a 3-way toggle to go series/single/parallel

Also, I'd go with a Sadowsky preamp...just because I dig the setup.
