talk me out of it

talk me out of making my passive jazz bass active.
Most of you know my Jazz with the MM pickups in it from recent threads.

Something in the back of my mind is telling me to go active and I'll get the most out of these pickups and this upgrade.

something else is telling me to stay passive since I have 3 other active basses.

Without going absolutely bonkers with routing the body any more than I already did, an Aguilar obp-2 would be the best fit, where the module will fit in the existing control cavity, but I'd probably have to route a battery compartment. I tried fitting a battery in the control cavity as it is, and it's too thick.

I'm afraid that the preamp will not be that much of an improvement as this bass really thumps as it is. But I always liked to have independent bass and treble controls.

I think I'm just having fits of withdrawal from my active basses...maybe I just need to plug in with one of them.

Why not try it out with an outboard pre-amp first and see if you like it?

What do you want from a preamp? More output? EQ features? Both?

I'd try it a little in passive mode, than add a pre if you really need it.

An outboard pre could be also a nice choice.

output isn't the thing, the bass has plenty of output. It's the eq control that I like.

I think I'm jumping the gun, I think I should just leave it passive for now. the last time I questioned myself I wound up selling a bass and regretted it...(but this one I ain't selling )

Don't do it, leave it alone, passive is the way that bass is meant to be. blah, blah, blah.

I hope I talked to out of it.

I've built a bass from rough lumber club #2 (I'm pretty sure).

The bass is perfect. Leave it alone.

Having an onboard that takes the signal after the pups are blended and the tone knob is the same tone as a passive + outboard. However, if you are buffering each pup before blending and eq'ing, then you have the "active bass" tone. You can have an active bass with eq that keeps the passive vibe.
