TBC: from active to passive

Sign in to disble this ad
I thought I would make a thread for this as I have a few questions and I can post progress pics and all that (if I don't stuff it up ).

I want to turn my TBC AP500M with an active pre-amp into a passive bass. This would be my first "project" if I end up doing it myself, at the moment I still lack important equipment such as a soldering iron.. and solder

Essentially it is:Volume, Bass Boost/Cut and Treble Boost/Cut
I want to wire it Volume/Tone and I will leave the third knob on there in-case I ever decide to make it active again. I want to keep the jack in the same place which is on the side as I have no problem with not having it at the front.

I found the wiring diagram on the Seymour Duncan website that Funbass pointed out in another thread.

Now what I need:
- 2x 250k pots
- 1x .50 capacitor
- a soldering gun and solder
- the manual solder sucking device for all of the times I will stuff it up

my first question is.. how are the pots stuck on, just with glue? and what's a good kind of glue to stick on the replacement ones?

I did this on my TBC JT-400-JJ

The pots are held on by a thin nut and lockwasher. You have to remove the knob, and then use a wrench or socket wrench to unscrew the nut.

Look closely at the know. Thre may be a small screw that you have to unscrew to remove it. But, IIRC, the knobs just pull right off.

Do a search, another TBer did the mod you want to do with pictures. I think his TB handle is "needmoney."

Hey Giglawyer,

thanks for the info! Yeh I have checked out the thread and needmoney has also posted some pics and info in another thread that I was in but I thought I would post a general topic rather than ask him 6,000 questions on how to do it

I'm about to hit the sack, but I can do a step by step thing tomorrow sometime. If you could get a picture of the inside of the cavity with the preamp still installed that would be great, as I don't really remember the innards.
