Testing and measuring pickups.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey I'm about to run a test on some pickups to see if I can determine the resonance and the LCR Values.

I am guessing that I can get some basic values by using a tone generator, a voltage divider and an oscilloscope.

I don't know if any one has any idea of where I can find any information about any formulas for trying to find LCR values.

Also I was wondering if anyone here new if there was a method to determine what a pick ups aperture is.

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps I'm asking the wrong people, but I was thinking I may be able to find a pickups resonant character by first finding the pickups R(dc). Then measuring the voltages Then finding at what frequency Vmax occurs at. Say measuring the voltage across the pickup in series with a 1 meg ohm load.

I know the 2 important LC equations.

F=2piRL and F=1/(2piRC) resonance occurs where:

2piRL=1/(2piRC) or F=1/(2piR*sqr(LC))

Seems reasonable at least for a simple ball park estimate.

Any thoughts on pickup aperture? At least for Single coil pickups??

Thanks

Aperture seems to be represented by ferrofluid or magnetic sensing strips. See Q-Tuner gallery or EMG site.

I think this is where the big boys - David Schwab/SGD ferinstance - play:

You might also snag that book by Erno who came up with the Q-Tuners.
