Contact Curtis Novak and tell him what you're want. I just put one of his PB-V's in my P-bass, and the sound is phenomenal, very close to what you're looking for.

may i comment on the sheer goofiness of the guy playing that bass? too damn goofy to take seriously!

I had a great experience with a Nordstrand NP4 i dropped in a fretless P a while back. Best. P. Tone. Ever.
perhaps one of those is in your future?

What you are hearing is a small amp with little or no overhead.

Play through a combo amp with the bass turned up.

After watching the clip, I'm not sure if this is just trolling or what not, but if it's a serious post, as Brachal stated above, Curtis Novak will wind what you want. Excerpt from an email exchange -

me - If I had to describe the sound or characteristic of the pickup I would want, I would describe it as such – I would like the pickup to sound like a dimarzio p bass pickup that has been smoking pall malls for the last 20 years.

curtis's reply - I can get you that pickup It is my PB-90, it is not listed on my site... I need to find some time to get it up there... you can hear it here

YouTube - ‪CurtisNovak's Channel‬‏

I went ahead and placed the order.
Hope you find what works for you with that particular bass.

uh, it sounds like a stock P-bass pickup run through a compressor.

get yourself any decent "vintage-type" P pickup and a nice compressor pedal and you're there.

Seriously.
PDB '70 P-bass. I gave my '64 a face lift...looks pretty close to what junior was showing off in the vid.

"Wann'a get high!"
That clip is so painful to watch. ...... And I think that sound has more to do with the amp than the bass. Sounds more like an Ibanez than a classic P-bass.
If you're really after that over-drive sound look around the music stores in your area for an old 70's Dimarzio cream, some came in black, P-bass pickups with adjustable poles, Should be able to get them for 10 or 20-bucks. ...... Have them installed high and close to the strings and you're on your way.

since the clip is of a regular '70s P-bass pickup, why use anything other than something that's close to a regular '70s P-bass pickup (which is to say any decent vintage repro)?

Try a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders! They are available at Musicians friend and many other online music dealers. They have quarter inch magnets and can deliver a brutal P-Bass sound. The rest is up to you to dig in and make them grind!

I would like to critique on what I see in bass players today and yesterday as well.

Take note of that sloppy bass player you-tube vid originally posted. He would play much better if his bass strap was higher. Notice how he physically struggles because of the un-natural wrist bending? See how his thumb hangs over the top of the neck? Aside from sloppy playing, Bad playing form and can lead to Carpel tunnel syndrome over time.

I guess it's cool to hang the bass low like that, but is sloppy playing cool too?
