Is there a big sound difference replacing Squier P bass PU

Sign in to disble this ad
I have just a stock Squier P bass. It's kind of noisey I suppose, but more or less sounds like a P bass.

Would installing a 62 reissue pickup make a noticable sound difference given the rest of the qualities of the inexpensive bass?

I use nickel strings and would like to maintain a traditional P sound thats why I think I would lean towards 62 reissues versus seymour duncan SPB 1.

big shock - a squier that has cheap electronics...

If you like how this bass plays, spend the money to get a decent replacement set... and while you're installing them, shield it up. That will help.

As for which p'up - - ANY good aftermarket p'up would likely be an improvement -- don't agonize too much about it - - - my last straight "P" bass I had I put SD quarter pounders in and loved it. Of course, I also put a J in the bridge position (I'm a big PJ fan...)

good luck

yes, it will make a big difference. and after having all of them, IMO, the duncan SPB-1 is the best vintage P 'bass pickup by far. it sounds 100% identical to my 100% original seafoam green 1962 P bass (its NOT a reissue - my avatar pic).

get one of the P Bass wiring kit's from ebay as well. new pups & cts pots, switchcraft, orange drop will make a tremendous difference. it is easy to do.

i agree about changing the pots to CTS 250K ( solid shaft/audio) and a switchcraft jack, but i use an .047uf cornell-dubilier ceramic disc (NOS Fender) for my tone caps to maintain the vintage fender tone. i bought about 200 of them as surplus stock when fender moved from their fullerton factory.

Thanks guys.

I had not thought about the wiring. It makes sense to get that all dialed as well.
