Is there such a thing?
I'm looking for a three position rotary switch that look like a potentiometer. Effectively, I want a switch disguised as a pot. Has to be three position and I don't want any sort of push/pull. Anyone know of anything?
I found 4-6 position rotary pot switches
Yeah I saw those. Unfortunately, overkill for what I wanna do. Thanks though
A 3-position rotary switch is a pretty common product carried by electronic parts stores - not necessarily those geared towards musical instruments. Chances are, these would be "four pole" ones given the number of positions. They're cheap as well. The "size" of the switch might be a bit larger than a standard size pot can so you'll have to take that into consideration. What do you have in mind anyway?
If you have room for something a little bigger in diameter than a full-size CTS pot, a number of vendors offer enclosed, single-wafer rotary switches that use a stop ring to adjust the number of positions
Three-position rotary switches often use a 90 degree throw, which feels very clunky. If you use the stop ring to limit a 12-position switch to three positions, then you get a nice, short throw, which feels much better.
You can get them in various bushing and shaft lengths.
You also need to decide on how many poles you need. Is this just going to be a regular pickup switch, are you doing something more complicated, like series/parallel?
I just used one of these switches to do a 4-position setup, with master volume and tone:
- both in parallel
- both in series
It looks neater than multiple micro-switches, and I find it more predictable than sweeping two volumes or a balance pot. Guitarists often do this to get a fourth selection out of a Telecaster. As far as I know, Sheldon Dingwall was the first to do it with basses.
I don't wanna enlarge the hole as I'd like to keep stuff reversible.
This should cover your needs...
