Question Is there a way to make a set of Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Pickups fit my USA Fender DLX V.

Sign in to disble this ad
I would like to know if it is hard to alter my bass to make Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Pickups for 5 string basses fit in my USA fender Jazz V deluxe 5 string Bass.

Why is it not a direct replacement? is it to small or to big, I have been going to different Web sights and Comparing measurements and they are just confusing me more.

Does dimarzio make them the right size to order if I measure my stock pickups?

I guess I am just trying to understand how they do not fit, are they To big or to small?

I would like to buy them without having to alter my bass to much, I have read where allot of people have put them in their fender Jazzes,
I want to know how it was accomplished?

Does anyone have any info, thanks.

so is it a no as far as not possible?, Or No it won't fit right so I will have to do some routing? in that case is it major routing or just a little routing? I just dont want to butcher my bass up to make it work if you know what i mean.

Basically is there a trick to this? has anyone here done it, what was your trick to making it work?

Thanks for your reply.

no, there's no trick, and yes it would need some real surgery.

it would require a different bridge with narrower spacing (leaving gaps on the sides of the now too-wide fretboard), and would likely require cutting into both pickup cavities to fit the narrower pickups and their (probably) different-spaced mounting flanges.

I'd look for something else, maybe from nordstrand or fralin.

you are awesome!, I am slightly sad over this, but you have been such a big help to me, and I now totally understand why, So My back up plan was to get bartolini 57 j1's they make a direct fender fit for these pickups, I am paring what ever pick ups i am getting with an audere pre amp with the 6 z modes, it is a direct fender drop in.

I want a really modern sounding jazz, almost stingray'ish and lucky me the bridge pickup is almost in the sweet spot area, it is not all that close to the bridge, fender must have been placing the bridge pickups far from the bridge in 1997 when my jazz was made, so i figure if I get a split coil hum-bucking jazz style pickup with a deep modern hi-fi tone in the bridge position, it should get me a similar sound , well maybe closer to a stingray tone that is.

what do you think? are the 57-j1 barts a good choice for that, or is there something better?

thanks for your input!

I'd strongly suggest the Nordstrand NJ5FS for what you're looking for.

Bartolinis are a good choice. I own two basses with Bartolinis, and they're great pickups at a reasonable price.

Skip the audere and just get the nordstrands if you're short on funding. You can swap the pre later.

well the problem is is that my stock pre amp is not working anymore, So If I got new pickups I would have to somehow wire it in passive, or I could get the pre and the Barts and get them installed now or get the pre and save up for some nordies later, decisions... decisions..... hmmmm.........
Now I am leaning now more towards the audere and the Barts because of money and the point that my bass is in the shop now, having the neck adjusted, so If I buy what i can afford now he can just put them in this next week, but I really like nordies, I need to find out if it is cheaper for him to do it all now while he has my bass, or if it will cost me more to come back later and have him do more work thus paying more of his labor a time and fee's, I guess I will find out.

Thanks, you guys were all so helpful, you all rock!

The passive Nordies sound great. Much better (in my opinion)
than the Ultra's or the Barts. Eventually you can also get the
Nordy Pre and have the baddest bass on the block. (imo)

I know somebody did that, all he did was exchange the pickup covers but i dont know if that is hard to do on the Ultra Jazz pups.

ya, that is what I am wondering my self? hopefully I will find that out before next week when i buy the pickups and pre amp, I know that barts will sound good, but I wonder if the dimarzio's, nordstrands or Sadowsky will fit me better and give me more of the edge I am looking for, Well I if I dont like them, I guess it wont be to hard to return considering the pickups just screw into the audere pre amp, It would make for a pretty painless swap out of the pickups.

Again thanks for everyones opinion's and help, And Please keep the opinions coming and if anyone has any sound clips that I can hear of any Modern Jazz sounding set up's, please let me know, thanks.
