Would using guitar pickups actually work good in a bass? I've seen it done a few times before, But I have never really gotten a general opinion about it.

Whats your say? I have some old blade style guitar 'buckers laying around I might mod into an old ibanez..

Yes, many do. I've used several and they work fine, some superbly.
A pickup is a pickup; they don't know what instrument they're placed in.

I personally have had very bad luck with it but considering the bass it could have been as much the electronics as anything else.

In the end you can always take 'em out if you don't like 'em, so there's no harm in givin' 'em a shot.
