Thickest 1/4" Cable available?

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone know where I can get a REALLY thick high quality 1/4" cable? The 18' one I've been using for 5+ years was lost (or stolen) at a gig recently and the guy who made it for me is no longer making them.

In my experience the thicker the cable the better especially at 18'. Plus thicker ones tend to lay flat and not get twisted up as frequently.

Please don't tell me to buy a Monster cable - I've been down that road.

Thanks!

Do you mean instrument cable? Speaker?

I have a Carvin that I got at a clearance sell. So I guess that means they don't make it anymore. It's the thickest instrument cable I've seen. I'd bet that if you contacted Carvin they could make you up one.

For my speaker interconnect cable I use ProCo Fat Max. It's overkill at 8 gauge but I like it because it's bullet proof. I've spoken to the folks at ProCo at last year's NAMM show. the guy there told me that he can pretty make up any cable I would like for any application.

There are also several folks on the net that do custom cables. Do a search.

Just use Mogami, Canare or Belden. I have no twisting issues with mine, they last very well if you take care of them. Thicker is not any better electrically.

you should take a look at Bayou Cable http://www.bayoucables.com/. Butch is a great guy who makes great cables for a very reasonable charge and has great customer support. I got a variety of cables, some fairly unusual, some pretty standard, from him last year and they are all beautifully/solidly built and made to last.

good luck

+1 on bayou cables. I bought some off of Butch 2-3 years ago and have had zero problems. I bought speaker, patch and instrument. Love 'em all. Pretty quick turnaround and nice guy to boot.

Hey guys thanks for all your responses, I know about Butch at Bayou but the topic of this post is thickest 1/4" cable available and I don't think Butch makes anything along those lines. Other suggestions?

I just checked Butch's site and it looks like he uses Canare G6.
I'm pretty certain that that cable is 18 gauge which is pretty thick for instrument cable.

Go with either bayou or a Peavey PV series cable. The Peavey ones have 2x wrap of shielding and are as thick as speaker cords (.280 on my micrometer... or 9/32" thick). If you need one to be stereo, lop the ends off and put a TRS end on it. There are three conductors inside. All for the tune of about fifteen bucks

I bought a Fender Gold bass cable and the thing is absolutely monstrous, with a woven cover (make sure you get the bass, not guitar model). I think they went for a very low resistance at the expense of capacitance. It seems to bring out lows a little and attenuate the highs a lot. It is a very nice cable and not expensive. I never use it because I like more treble in my sound, but it is really nice mechanically.
