My gigging bass of choice these days has been my Kawai KRB-105. I love the way it plays. It sounds pretty good too...

Pretty good isn't my cup of tea, though. I want awesome.

On this particular bass, the current setup is vol-tone-pickup select switch. Pickups are EMGs.

The issue that this bass suffers from is an itsy bitsy, teenie weenie control cavity. It barely has enough room for a 9v battery, let alone a good preamp.

Another thing is, I'd like to run a J-P-J setup. I like the PJ, but miss dual J pickup tones. So I want the Stu Hamm pickup configuration! Aside from plenty of tone options, I get a thumbrest further towards the neck.

What would you imagine a ballpark figure may be for:
1) routing a J pickup cavity
2) routing a larger control cavity and a cover for it

I can do all of the wiring, but I'm not too familiar with a router.
Anyone ever have this done?

(and I felt this thread would be better served in the "Pickups & Electronics" category because it has more to do with electronics issues than "Setup and Hardware")

I'd charge about $150 for the routing and making a new control cover.

That's cool. I can handle that!

So onto the preamp/pickup configuration...

I was thinking about going with Dimarzio Ultra Jazz and their hotter P pickup. For selection, I'm thinking about 3 on-off-on switches (series-off-parallel on each pickup). Aside from being somewhat delicate to switch between or confusing to some, is there an issue with that setup?

As for preamps, I'm leaning towards the ACG, as I've always wanted to try it and this seems like a great project for it. However, I'm not sure how to run it, as there's no 3 pickup model...
I'm guessing I'd just get the single pickup version and run the outputs of the pickup switches into that and call it a day. BUT...
I want to have a bypass and passive tone controls.
How should I go about that?
