Thoughts on changing jazz bridge PU only?

Sign in to disble this ad
I would love to hear comments, considerations and concerns about the idea of changing ONLY the bridge PU in a J-J single coil config.

Nordstrand and most all PUs makers sell them as separates, yet most discussion is about changing the pair.

If I like the tone of the stock neck PU and want a little more beef out of the bridge, why not consider changing only the Bridge. If I went with a Norstrand or the like, it would look the same. I could even set it in the stock cover.

Is there something I am missing? We used to do this stuff on guitars in the 80s all the time.

It's not a problem. You will find that if you go for a hotter wind in the bridge, which sounds like what you want, it will be a bit louder than the neck pup, but you can of course adjust for that with the vol controls. There is also electrical interaction between pups in a Jazz, which may darken the neck pup just a bit, if you go for a hot bridge pup.

That won't be a big deal for me. It may actually be prefered, as a little more to the bridge is the jazz bass sound I have come to love anyway.

If you say darken to mean that it may cost me some high end, that is more concerning.

I guess the worst case is try it and if it is not everything I want it to be, I just order the matching neck PU. They don't give you much of a deal for buying the set anyway. It would only end up costing me a few bucks for the double shipping.
