thoughts on new 6 string bass pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
Been looking for some new pickups for my trb1006 but can`t decide between humbuckers or single coils.
Would be interested in any useful thoughts or opinions!

Will be using a "EMG 45" sized cases and the pickups will be wired through a Audere classic 4 band pre.

Cheers Thanks!

You can't go wrong with SGD pickups. Another forum member is selling a pair of the "ND3" humbuckers in that particular size. Here's the link:

FS: SGD Neo Series 3 6-string pickups

And if you want a single coil tone (with no hum) I make my Sidewinders in that size.

Thanks for the comments.
What would be the difference in the rang of tone between the sidewinders and your neo humbuckers with a narrow apeture?

The Sidewinders have more zing on the top, and the narrow neos have more mids. The two styles also mix well.

Well it depends on what you want. It you like a fatter neck pickup tone, then a neo at the neck is good, since theey have a P bassish tone.

Or if you like a brighter neck and fatter bridge, then a neo at the bridge would work.

I have to say however, that the new narrow sidewinder bridge pickup (as used in the Jazz covers) are really punchy sounding. I did a recording session with them over the weekend.

The more I think about it the more i`m leaning towards more of a70`s jazz bass type of a tone!
Like the the idea of the narrow bridge pickup if I was to go with a pair of sidewinders which version of neck pickup would be the most suitable in your opinion?
Do you make the narrow bridge in a 6 string size?

The narrow sidewinders would get you the Jazz bass tone. I make all the models in six string size.

This might be a bit of a stupid question but is there any difference to the sidewinder coils used in a humbucker and the coils used in the new narrow coils used in your jazz covers

Not a stupid question at all. The Sidewinders in the Jazz covers are indeed a little different. They are narrower, have a thinner blade, and are wound with thinner wire. This was all to make them fit in the Jazz covers, and they do have a somewhat different tone.

I'm going to be offering these as "narrow aperture" Sidewinders. They have more mids and a very punchy tone.

I'm going to have the store back open in a week or so, and they will be availble then. Yes, they come in six string soapbars, both EMG 45 and Bart P4 size.
