Question Thunderbird coil tap?

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone tried to install a coil tap on a Thunderbird type bass? I have never had one but am considering purchasing one and wondered what it would sound like if someone installed a coil tap. Being a little more bias towards a jazz bass sound, I'm wondering if you tap the coils if it will give it a more jazz bass tone, any thoughts?

Coil tapping requires the pickups to be rewound with a tap somewhere in the winding. That's not an easy mod.

People often confuse tapping with splitting, btw.
If that's the case, I believe that most Gibson pickups have only a single-conductor output, so trying to do series, parallel and single coil options will require the pickups to be modified for a four-conductor output.

Ah, that makes sense, I was thinking splitting and tapping were the same, thanks for clearing that up!
